Beacon Marks 3 Years of Free EC Distribution Amid Ongoing Reproductive Freedom Fight 

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Beacon Reproductive Health Network is marking three years of Free EC, its statewide emergency contraception access project that has helped thousands of Missourians access time-sensitive healthcare through a growing network of community partners, volunteers, donors, and pickup locations.

Since launching in 2023, Free EC has distributed more than 105,821 emergency contraception kits across Missouri through both mail-order delivery and in-person pickup sites, helping reduce barriers to care for people across the state.

Emergency contraception (EC) is birth control that prevents pregnancy after sex. Because it is most effective when taken quickly, delays caused by cost, transportation, stigma, clinic closures, or pharmacy access can put care out of reach for many people.

“At Beacon, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access the healthcare they need without barriers, shame, or political interference,” said Michelle Trupiano, Executive Director of Beacon Reproductive Health Network. “Free EC was built by community, for community – and for three years, Missourians have shown what’s possible when people come together to protect healthcare access for one another.”

What began as a direct response to growing reproductive healthcare barriers in Missouri has evolved into a statewide, community-powered infrastructure supporting access to emergency contraception. Volunteers have assembled thousands of kits, donors have sustained the project, and partner organizations across Missouri have helped expand access through local pickup locations and grassroots outreach.

The milestone comes amid continued attacks on reproductive freedom in Missouri and across the country. Beacon says access to emergency contraception remains a critical part of the broader fight for bodily autonomy and healthcare access.

“As Missourians continue organizing around reproductive freedom and abortion access, access to emergency contraception remains essential,” said Trupiano. “People deserve the freedom to make decisions about their bodies, their health, and their futures – including the ability to access contraception quickly when they need it.”
